Nail Fungal infections

Fungal infections the nail is also called onychomycosis. It affects the fingernails or toe nails. These kinds of fungal infections are classified in to four. They are:

  • Distal subungualonychomycosis
  • White superficial onychomycosis
  • Proximal subungualonychomycosis and
  • Candidalonychomycosis

Signs & symptoms

As a result of the infection, the nail becomes thick and discolored. It may become black, yellow, green or white. When the infection progresses, the nail becomes brittle. It will become painful if left untreated.

Treatments

Treating such fungal infections can be challenging, because the infection is embedded within the nail and it will be difficult to reach. The nail may have to be removed in severe cases. These infections can be easily cured with medications to apply or eat.
